Smells That May Not Require Air Conditioning Repair
It is not uncommon for your a/c unit to kick out some pretty pungent smells but this doesn’t always mean that you need to call an air conditioning repair technician. As it is a working piece of machinery with electrical, gas and oil powered parts, there is a chance that a few harmless odors may seep out into your cool airflow. An air conditioning repair is not always necessary and sometimes just a quick wipe over with a cloth, or a dusting of the vents will do the trick to get rid of the unpleasant smells it gives off.
A stench that resembles Old Man Pete’s stinky feet is usually just a drainage problem that causes water to stagnate somewhere on its’ way out of the system. If you can locate the blockage and you are comfortable with removing it, you will not need to call an air conditioning repair engineer, but please get professional help if you are not certain on what you are doing.
If the odor is similar to the above but with a moldy hint to the aroma, it is more than likely that the stagnant water has helped mold to grow inside your system or maybe on the vents that expel the air. If you try and clean the filter and vents first, this can solve the problem. If the problem continues to exist, you are best off calling for an air conditioning repair technician to give your system a thorough clean inside and out.
If you haven´t used you’re a/c system for a while, maybe during the winter, and when you first turn it on again you get a rotten smell coming out of it, there is no reason to panic. The chances are that an animal has entered you system to try and find shelter but died and now the corpse is slowly rotting and decomposing. You then have the misfortune of having that rotten smell being circulated around your home. You should be able to remove the dead animal, clean the area and then the smell will disappear. If you are too squeamish to touch the dead animal or you are unable to locate or access it, I suggest you call an air conditioning repair technician.
